One NFL owner took the opportunity to let his coaching staff know that they’re on the hot seat entering the 2024 season.
Shad Khan has owned the Jacksonville Jaguars since 2012. He has a reputation for being one of the more patient NFL owners, but the 73-year-old seems prepared for more sweeping changes if his team falls short again.
The Jaguars stood at 8-3 entering Week 13 and looked poised to capture their second straight AFC South division crown. But the Jags imploded with losses in four of their final five games, finishing 9-8 and missing out on the postseason altogether.
Per Ryan Gaydos of Fox News, the NFL owner emphasized that results must show on the field in 2024. Khan specifically mentioned the need for Jacksonville coaches to develop their young players:
“I think there’s a sea change for us – and this is for our coaching, that they have to develop young players. Our solution isn’t going to be we’re going to be signing free agents every year. We don’t have the ability.
Bottom line is that young talent has to be developed. The coaching, the coaching staff, their priorities have to change. Their mindset has to change. That’s where we’re going to get our future players.
We cannot have this addiction to free agents.”

The Jaguars appeared to have hit a home run when they hired former Super Bowl-winning head coach Doug Pederson in 2022, following the disastrous Urban Meyer tenure that didn’t even make it to a full season.
But obviously, Khan is getting antsy following a wasted 2023 season that began with so much promise. He didn’t give Trevor Lawrence $275 million for this team to be mired in mediocrity, after all.
Khan was a surprisingly patient NFL owner during the Doug Marrone-David Caldwell era, keeping that core together for five years even though they only mustered one playoff appearance.
Shad Khan’s Record As An NFL Owner Isn’t Pretty
Through his first 12 seasons as an NFL owner, Shad Khan is a woeful 60-135-0. Jacksonville has only finished with more than six wins three times, and they’ve hit double-digit victories once (2018) during his ownership.
Khan can only take so much blame, though. He spends more in free agency than most other owners, and it’s not his fault that the Jaguars inexplicably lost their momentum late last season with the postseason in their grasp.
So yes, a major change awaits the Jaguars if they fall short again this year.
