As you can likely imagine, Derrick Henry was just as much of a cheat code in high school as he is in the National Football League.
This past weekend, one of Henry’s state records fell. Kayleb Wagner of Baker High School, in a 49-48 shootout victory over South Walton High School, ran for 535 yards and six touchdowns. Did we mention that he only has one arm.
His stats were good enough to break the state record set in 2012, when Henry ran for 502 yards and six touchdowns in a victory for Yulee.
According to a report by Mitch Stephens of MaxPreps, Wagner received a direct message on Instagram from the Titans running back.
“We went back and forth for five minutes or so,” Wagner told MaxPreps. “He congratulated me, said he would send me a pair of his cleats and game gloves. It was very, very cool. I think it really hit me then that I had the record.”
Henry’s senior year stats are just insane: 462 carries for 4,261 yards and 55 touchdowns in 12 games. That’s 327.8 yards per game and 9.2 yards per carry.
“I think it is incredible,” Henry told reporters Thursday. “I thought it was really cool. I got to talk to him a little bit on Instagram and hopefully he breaks some more. That was really cool, definitely an inspiration to me and I am sure he is an inspiration to his team and everybody over there in that community. It was definitely cool to see and hopefully, I can do something for him these upcoming weeks.”
