An official cause of death for former NFL running back OJ Simpson has been released following his death earlier this month.
Simpson’s passing has dominated the headlines, given his status as one of the most infamous athletes in the history of American sports.
TMZ has learned that his official cause of death is the same as initially believed, with OJ losing a battle to prostate cancer. His longtime attorney, Malcolm LaVergene, revealed as much.
“Malcolm LaVergne, Simpson’s longtime attorney and the executor of his estate, tells us he has received the death certificate for the disgraced former football superstar and actor, confirming our report that O.J. succumbed to cancer,” the publication reported this weekend.
Simpson, who was 76 at the time of his death, spent his final months in hospice care before being released into the care of his family.
The former Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers RB revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer back in May of 2023. He didn’t specify the type of cancer but suggested he was in remission and was doing okay.

Suspicions of the disease returning arose at the beginning of the year after he was spotted looking frail. He used a cane to support himself during his last handful of public appearances.
Simpson had been a regular guest on the ‘It Is What It Is’ podcast with Cam’Ron and Mase, joining the rappers as a football analyst. He last posted a video to X hours before the Super Bowl on February 11.
OJ Simpson’s Death Prompted Mixed Reactions
News of OJ Simpson’s was met with mixed reactions. The former football player, who also starred for USC, was accused of murdering his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in 1994.
He was acquitted the following year but was found liable for the deaths in a civil trial in 1997.
While some paid respects after his death, others regard him as someone who got away with murder and finally met his punishment.
