Zach Wilson isn’t the starting quarterback for the New York Jets anymore, and oddsmakers did not see that as a negative. In fact, they actually have backed the Jets even more with Mike White taking over quarterbacking duties Sunday against the Chicago Bears.
If you watched Zach Wilson play last Sunday, or basically since he was drafted, this news won’t shock you.
New York was a 4-point favorite over the Bears, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. Hours later, the Jets had jump up to a six-point favorite.
The Jets were 4.5-point favorites at BetMGM against the Chicago Bears on Sunday before the benching and it stayed there after the news.
“Jets spread is moving from -4.5 to -5 with Zach Wilson’s benching. Market believes White/Flacco is an upgrade,’ said NBC Sports betting analyst Jay Croucher.
It’s rare to see a point spread go the other way when a team benches its preferred starter for a backup, but it’s clear they believe this Jets team is much better off with anybody under center than Wilson.

Wilson hit bottom last week against the New England Patriots, completing 9-of-22 passes for 77 yards. There was a lot of drama after the game, with teammates either ripping the offensive publicly or complaining privately that Wilson took no accountability.
The Jets were 6-3 before the loss to the Patriots, but most of those wins were in spite of their quarterback. The question is if White will be much better.
White has not played yet this season, but did make three starts and appeared in four games for the Jets in 2021. He completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 953 yards, five touchdowns and eight interceptions.
