Over the past 48 hours or so, it has become increasingly clear that the Washington Redskins will have no choice but to change their name in 2020 due to pressure from top sponsors.
FedEx, the name sponsor of the team’s stadium, has called for a name change. Nike responded by removing all of their team apparel from their website. Pepsi responded last by calling for their name to change as well.
On Friday, the franchise announced that it is undergoing a “thorough review of the team’s name.” As Adam Schefter has said, “there’s no review if there’s no change coming.”
The only thing left to do is to figure out what the team’s nickname will be going forward. Sportsbook BetOnline has put out new odds on the replacement name, and the oddsmakers are thinking the “Presidents” will win out.
Many have called for the team to adopt the name the “Washington Redtails,” after the famous World War II Tuskegee Airmen.
