Some worrying details pertaining to the injury suffered by Buffalo Bills running back Nyheim Hines have emerged following reports revealing the player is set to be out for the entire 2023 season.
Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network initially reported that the player had suffered a “significant” knee injury away from the team that would keep him out for the entire campaign.
Pelissero has since revealed that Hines was the victim of an unfortunate jet skiing accident as he was struck by another rider and suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He’s set to undergo surgery as a result.
The Bills got Hines via trade in the middle of last season, acquiring him as part of a deal with the Indianapolis Colts. They restructured his contract during the offseason, with the tailback accepting less money to remain with the team.
Hines was poised to be the Bills’ primary kick and punt returner, having famously returned to kickoffs for touchdowns last season. He was also expected to be the backfield pass-catching option behind James Cook, Latavius Murray, and Damien Harris. However, his injury has left the third-down role for passes up for grabs.
The Bills have current options in Deonte Harty, Khalil Shakir, and Micah Hyde to fill the two roles but could look to the market for a replacement.
