Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has emerged as a candidate for an NFL team looking to fill a vacancy ahead of the 2025 season.
The 39-year-old has seen his stock rise considerably after leading the Fighting Irish to a dream run in the College Football Playoff, which has them just one win away from a national championship.
According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, the Chicago Bears intend to interview Freeman.
“I am told the team [Bears] wants to interview Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman for the job,” Pelissero said via NFL Network on Sunday.
He noted that the Fighting Irish HC was unlikely to entertain any approaches from NFL teams before the national title game on January 20.
“Obviously unlikely that he would entertain NFL overtures prior to that game, a week from tomorrow against Ohio State,” the NFL insider continued, adding that Chicago has done “extensive research for months” on Freeman.

Marcus Freeman Made History With His CFP Semifinal Win Against Penn State
Marcus Freeman made NCAA history in Notre Dame’s win over Penn State on Thursday. He will be the first Black head coach to take a team to the national championship game.
There would have been a head coach of color in the final either way, as the Nittany Lions’ James Franklin is also black, but Freeman will be the one coaching in the historic game.
The former NFL linebacker was born to a Black father and a South Korean mother, which also makes him the first HC of Asian descent to compete in the CFP.
