A pair of Air Force 1 sneakers that Nike made in collaboration with Colin Kaepernick bearing the likeness of the former NFL quarterback dropped on Monday reportedly sold out within minutes of its release.
“This Air Force 1 season, Nike partnered with a collective of collaborators to design an AF1 that connects to their life personally. Colin was identified because we believe his voice and perspective inspire many generations on and off the field,” Nike said in a statement.
The Air Force 1 x Colin Kaepernick is no longer available after its release Monday in North America at Nike stores, select retailers and SNKRS, Nike said.
Just last year, the footwear and apparel giant made the 32-year-old the face of an ad campaign for the company’s 30th anniversary, despite him not playing a snap in the NFL since 2016.
The sneaker also has a not-so-subtle message with the date “08 14 16” on the sole of the right shoe, which is a date that marks the 1st time Kaepernick did not stand during the playing of the national anthem, during a preseason game between the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers. He actually began sitting before that game, but wouldn’t start kneeling until September 1, 2016.
