Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was just as surprised as the rest of us when news broke of the club’s blockbuster trade for Kevin Byard.
On Monday afternoon, the Eagles bolstered their banged-up secondary by acquiring the two-time Pro Bowl safety from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for fellow safety Terrell Edmunds plus 2024 fifth and sixth-round draft choices.
While speaking to the media, the third-year head coach was actually informed of the Byard trade when a reporter brought up the news. Sirianni politely declined a request for additional information on the trade.
Philadelphia’s secondary has been hit hard by injuries, and they’ve been inconsistent against the pass as a result. The team is allowing 227.4 passing yards per game, considerably more than last year’s unit that allowed a league-low 179.8 per game.
Philly also had the eighth-best scoring defense a year ago (20.2 points allowed per game), but they’re in the middle of the pack entering Week 8.
Byard joins an Eagles secondary led by star cornerbacks James Bradberry and Darius Slay, by far football’s top CB duo a year ago. With the two-time First-team All-Pro now in the fold, there’s no telling how much better Philly’s pass defense can get from here.

The reigning NFC Champions are sitting pretty with a 6-1 record entering Sunday’s Week 8 road contest against the San Francisco 49ers. There’s plenty of football to be played, but it already feels like the NFC will once again come down to Sirianni’s Eagles and Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers.
