The Cleveland Browns named quarterback Deshaun Watson one of their five captains this week in what was a shocking move as far as supporters are concerned.
Even more surprising is the fact that Nick Chubb lost his captaincy as a result, though the running back is a fan favorite who is considered to be a stand-up guy.
Chubb isn’t one to find himself in trouble and is thought to be all about football. Plus, given Watson’s off-field issues, one can understand why fans would feel like this is a bad move.
Watson, who is headed into his first full season with the team, was voted as a captain by his teammates, according to coach Kevin Stefanski.

“Deshaun, it’s very, very natural for him to lead,” Stefanski said, per ESPN. “And I think he’s comfortable leading from out in front. I think he’s comfortable from leading and letting his teammates get credit. That’s just something he’s always done his whole life. And just the way he’s integrated himself into this football team is impressive to watch.”
The QB was suspended for 11 games in 2022 for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, with commissioner Roger Goodell labeling his behavior “predatory” and “egregious” after he was accused of sexual assault and misconduct by more than 20 women.
Watson has settled 23 civil suits while two are pending.
