The Jimmy Garoppolo era in San Francisco is clearly over after he told reporters that he’s spoken with GM John Lynch and has discussed finding the “right destination” for him this offseason.
“We’ve talked a little bit, I think more will happen in the days to come but yeah these guys have been very upfront about the whole thing,” Garoppolo said, via NFL.com. “Was talking to John (Lynch) yesterday just about finding the right destination and whatever the future holds, just doing it the right way. Got a long career ahead of me so I’m excited about it, excited about the opportunities to come.
“I just want to go to a place where they want to win, that’s really what I’m in this game for. I’m here to play football, I’m here to win football games and as long as I got that and good people around me, I think the rest will take care of itself.”
Despite what the franchise has planing to do since before last season started, some of the Niner faithful believe Jimmy G has played well enough to stick around, and that the team’s two NFC Championship visits and run to Super Bowl LIV are signs that San Francisco already has the right guy behind center.
The 49ers already placed their bet on rookie Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL draft, but now they are receiving a stark warning that history may repeat itself in a cruel way.
Sports Illustrated’s Clark Judge brought up the Denver Broncos under Mike Shanahan who ditched their quarterback Jake Plummer despite reaching the 2005 AFC Championship with him in favor of a new, young QB in Jay Cutler.
“The move [to trade up for Trey Lance,]” Judge said. “Like Denver’s 15 years earlier, is designed to make them more Super Bowl-ready with an inexperienced quarterback who reportedly has a high football IQ, takes care of the football and can move the chains in a myriad of ways. And maybe it does. But it didn’t work out for Mike Shanahan, and it may not work out for his son.

“‘Those that fail to learn from history,’ Winston Churchill wrote, ‘are doomed to repeat it.’
Consider that a warning.”
When the Broncos inserted Jay Cutler into the starting lineup, it ended up having the franchise miss the playoffs from 2006 to 2011 after making it the previous three seasons with Plummer.
In 2021, Jimmy Garoppolo has appeared in 15 games for the 49ers and completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 3810 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
