NFL wives and girlfriends might not agree on everything. But they can come together to let us know that they do not appreciate being referred to as gold diggers.
Five such women made appearances on the fourth episode of Women of the League to talk money, including contracts and prenups.
The show, hosted by the wife of former NFL quarterback Matt Leinart, Josie Leinart, brought in the likes of Christen Harper, Jared Goff’s fiance, as well as Isaac Rochell’s wife Allison, Dalton Risner’s wife Whitney, and Kym Jackson, the wife of Jeff Smith.
Leinart prodded the topic by revealing how much people referring to football WAGS as gold diggers bothers her.
“One of the things that bothers me so much, and I see it all the time in the comments section, is how people view NFL wives and they are constantly viewing NFL wives, generally speaking, as gold diggers,” she said.
“I know, personally, it’s a huge insult and I know that Whitney deals with it a lot like on TikTok, all those comments,” Allison replied. “It’s frustrating when you’re putting in so much hard work behind the scenes.”

Christen chimed in with claims that the gold digger comment is the most popular one she comes across, adding that people often assume the wives and girlfriends of NFL players don’t have their own thing going on.
“I feel like I totally relate to that,” she noted. “I think that’s the number one comment, not, I don’t get it all the time, but I think it goes unsaid a lot of people just assume things about you. They assume that you don’t have a job or you’re not doing anything outside of following your husband around or fiance around. And I think so many of the women that I know in the league are working hard at their careers or they’re doing amazing things, like, in the community.
“They’re doing so much more than just chasing a bag. Like, that’s just not the reality. Like I haven’t met any women that are doing that. Like, it’s not the norm and it’s I think it’s something that’s just been portrayed and it’s, you know, it’s just not the truth.”
Kym pointed out that there should be no issues even if she had to depend on her husband for every single thing, basically telling folks it’s none of their business.
“At the end of the day though even if I had zero income and my husband did decide that he wanted to pay for everything that I needed to get paid for. What’s the issue with that?” she asked.
“There really should be no issue and I shouldn’t have to be a ‘gold digger.’ If at the end of the day, my husband has a job that allows him to provide for me and he does and I’m fine with that and that’s our relationship standards, I feel like what’s the issue with that and why are people so upset about it? Is the thing, because I’m sure some of the same comments that assume that we’re gold diggers would love to be in that position, so I think sometimes it comes from a place of dissatisfaction of like with you within your own self and stuff.”
