An interesting trade idea has the Miami Dolphins adding yet another Pro Bowl pass-catcher to their potent offense.
Last year, general manager Chris Grier completed a trade for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill. The veteran speedster and second-year wideout Jaylen Waddle formed one of football’s most dynamic pass-catching duos, helping the Dolphins end a six-year playoff drought.
But tight end will be a position of need, with Mike Gesicki likely to leave in free agency. How could Miami fill the void, given the limited amount of proven and productive ght ends available in this year’s free agent class?
Kenneth Teape of NFL Analysis Network proposed a blockbuster trade that would see the Dolphins acquire Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller from the Las Vegas Raiders:
“In Miami, he would find even more room to operate than he did in Las Vegas. Hill and Waddle demand a lot of attention, which would provide Waller space to work the seams and over the middle of the field on deep crossing routes, his specialty with the Raiders.
Given his unique skill set, Waller would be a massive upgrade for the Dolphins. He is a willing and capable blocker in addition to his elite receiving ability. In McDaniel’s offense, he can be deployed similarly to how George Kittle is used with the San Francisco 49ers…
What would it cost to nab Waller? Given his recent injury history and the current condition of the Raiders’ franchise, a Day 2 pick was a suggested price. Miami has two third-round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft and it would make a lot of sense to offer one for Waller this offseason.”
Waller recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons for the Raiders in 2019 and 2020. Injuries, unfortunately, have limited him to 20 games over the last two seasons. In 2021, Waller hauled in 55 catches for 665 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, Waller caught 28 passes for 388 yards and three touchdowns.
The Raiders have already made one big move this offseason, releasing veteran Derek Carr from his contract. Running back Josh Jacobs, the 2022 rushing champion, is a pending free agent and could end up leaving Vegas.

If Jacobs goes, perhaps that entice the Raiders to rebuild and unload Waller. And if he hits the trade block, don’t be surprised if the Dolphins make a play for his services.
