An interesting trade proposal has the Los Angeles Chargers bolstering their front seven by landing one of the NFL’s top young linebackers.
Though the Chargers ended a four-year playoff drought by finishing with a 10-7 record, it’s quite evident that they need to fix up the defense if they’re to compete with top heavyweights like the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox outlined one dream trade scenario for all 32 NFL clubs. For the Chargers, he had them making a trade for Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pro Bowl linebacker Devin White:
“The Los Angeles Chargers should be looking to upgrade their run defense after finishing 2022 ranked dead last in yards per carry allowed (5.4),
Adding a Pro Bowl-caliber linebacker would be a great move for the Chargers, and they might be able to land one in a trade if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are desperate enough to create cap space…
While acquiring White might cost as much as the Chargers’ 22nd overall draft pick, it would be a safer option than rolling the dice on a draft selection. He’s already a proven playmaker and he just turned 25 years old earlier this month.”
The No. 5 pick of the 2019 NFL Draft was one of the NFL’s best defensive players in 2020, making big play after big play and helping the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl 55 championship.
Renowned for his do-it-all skill set, White would join a Chargers front seven which consists of two elite pass-rushers in Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. Surely, White would only help improve a defense that ranked 21st in scoring and 28th against the run.
The Chargers blew a 27-0 lead to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Super Wild Card Weekend, another strong indicator that more help on defense is needed. A player like White could definitely help the Bolts go further in the playoffs, but first, they have to see if the Bucs would actually trade him.
