Six weeks into the 2024 NFL season, the MVP race is already getting interesting. As usual, quarterbacks are stealing the spotlight, but there’s a fresh twist this year.
A couple of young stars are making serious noise; one is even a rookie! Will Lamar Jackson add another MVP to his collection? Can Patrick Mahomes rise above a rocky start? And could we see a first-year player shock the world and take home the award?
Let’s dive into the top MVP contenders so far and see who’s got the best shot at grabbing the trophy this season.
1. Lamar Jackson, Quarterbacks, Baltimore Ravens
Stats: 1,529 passing yards, 10 TDs, 2 INTs, 69.4 QBR (403 rushing yards, 2 TDs)
Lamar Jackson has wasted no time in making his case for MVP. After a rough 0-2 start for the Ravens, Jackson has been unstoppable in the last four games, leading his team to four straight wins. During that stretch, Jackson has been lights-out, ranking fourth in completion percentage (70.3%) and third in QBR (76.1) while tossing eight touchdowns to just one interception. Add his 236 rushing yards over the past four games (most among quarterbacks).
The best part? He’s doing this against tough competition. His Week 1 performance against the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs was one for the ages, with Jackson coming within inches of forcing overtime. Against Washington, he lit up a defense that had been allowing just 199 passing yards per game, torching them for 323 yards. Jackson is showing he’s not just valuable—he might be the most valuable.

2. Patrick Mahomes, Quarterbacks, Kansas City Chiefs
Stats: 1,235 passing yards, 6 TDs, 6 INTs, 57.8 QBR (83 rushing yards)
Patrick Mahomes might be having a down year by his usual standards, but don’t be fooled—he’s still very much in the MVP race. Despite being on pace for career lows in touchdown passes and QBR (and a career-high in interceptions), Mahomes has willed the Chiefs to an undefeated 5-0 start. That’s saying something, especially considering the depleted supporting cast he’s working with.
Kansas City has dealt with injuries to key players like receiver Rashee Rice (out for the season) and running back Isiah Pacheco. But Mahomes continues to do what he does best: win. Even if his stats don’t scream MVP, his ability to keep the Chiefs rolling, despite their offensive challenges, is why he’s still in the conversation.
3. Jayden Daniels, Quarterbacks, Washington Commanders
Stats: 1,404 passing yards, 6 TDs, 2 INTs, 73.7 QBR (322 rushing yards, 4 TDs)
It’s not every day you see a rookie in the MVP discussion, but Jayden Daniels is making a strong case. Leading the Washington Commanders to a surprising 4-2 record, Daniels is breaking rookie expectations left and right. He’s at the top of the NFL in completion percentage (75.3%) and isn’t just playing it safe—he’s pushing the ball downfield with an impressive 8.5 yards per attempt.
Daniels’ ability to balance efficiency with aggression has made him the biggest reason for Washington’s success so far. With the Commanders sitting atop the NFC East, his performance in these first six games has more than earned him a spot in the MVP race.

4. C.J. Stroud, Quarterbacks, Houston Texans
Stats: 1,577 passing yards, 10 TDs, 4 INTs, 66.3 QBR (75 rushing yards)
C.J. Stroud’s second NFL season might not be quite as flashy as his rookie year, but don’t sleep on him. He’s still putting up numbers that matter, and more importantly, the Texans are 5-1, making them a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Stroud has increased his completion percentage to 68.3%, up more than four points from last year, and is on pace to toss 28 touchdowns.
However, the Texans’ pass protection is still an issue—Stroud’s on track to get sacked 45 times this season. The rising interception count (he already has four, compared to just five all of last year) could also be a concern. But Stroud’s leadership on a team with Super Bowl aspirations keeps him in the MVP conversation.
5. Josh Allen, Quarterbacks, Buffalo Bills
Stats: 1,160 passing yards, 10 TDs, 0 INTs, 79.3 QBR (178 rushing yards, 3 TDs)
Josh Allen is having what could be his best season yet. His 79.3 QBR leads the league, and he’s the only quarterback on this list who hasn’t thrown a single interception so far. That’s a significant improvement from last year, when he threw a career-high 18 picks. Allen has clearly refined his game, cutting down on the mistakes while still putting up big numbers.
What’s especially impressive is that Allen is doing this with a revamped roster. His former top target, Stefon Diggs, is now catching passes from Stroud in Houston. But the Bills are still thriving offensively, thanks to Allen. Even without much of a running game, Buffalo ranks fourth in offensive expected points added, showing just how much Allen’s been carrying the team.
