NFL To Vote On Plan To Reward Teams For Developing Minority Coaches & GMs, No Reward For Team That Hires One

On Tuesday, NFL owners around the league are expected to vote on a measure that would reward teams for developing minority head coaches or general managers.

Peter King of NBC Sports dropped those details and stated that the team losing the minority coach or executive would receive a third-round compensatory selection in the next two drafts, if the candidate was employed by the former team for 2+ years.

At the virtual NFL meeting Tues, owners are likely to vote on a measure to address the paucity of non-interim minority coaches (currently 4) and GMs (2). New proposal would reward a team for developing a minority head coach or GM, but would not reward a team that hires one.

Per the resolution, the team losing the coach or GM would get third-round Compensatory Picks in next 2 drafts, if the coach or GM had been with the original team for at least 2 years.

For example: Texans hire KC offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who is Black, as head coach in early ‘21. KC would get third-round Compensatory Picks in next 2 drafts.

Only problem with the rule, as I see it, is it adds no motivation for the hiring team to pick a Black coach. I guess it could motivate teams to put minority assistants/scouts in big positions, to lure teams to look at them. We'll see. Measure has a good chance to pass.

Put it like this, if Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy gets a head-coaching job after the 2020 season, the Chiefs would receive a 3rd-round compensatory pick in 2021 and 2022.

The goal of the proposal is to reward teams for developing minority coaching and general manager staff members, putting them on the path to advancement in the league.

This resolution differs from an earlier unsuccessful proposal this year that would reward teams for hiring a head coach or general manager of color.

This offseason, Ron Rivera (Washington Football Team coach) and Andrew Berry (Cleveland Browns general manager) were the only two people of color to land head coaching or general manager positions.

In total, only four teams have minority head coaches, and only Cleveland and Miami have Black general managers.
