As fans debate the top 2023 quarterback prospects, some teams already have their eyes on the prospects for 2024.
Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are so good that some teams could skip the position this year and focus on the next off-season.
“So many scouts are already enamored with those two prospects, and I do think there’s some truth to the idea that some teams are looking at where they are drafting in 2023, then looking at the caliber of QBs available next April and ultimately opting to wait until 2024,” Matt Miller of ESPN reported.
As the current draft draws near, there is still no clear-cut top quarterback in the 2023 class, with C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, and Anthony Richardson all potentially going to the Carolina Panthers at No. 1 overall. You can even add Will Levis to this list.
Teams that need a new franchise quarterback but don’t have a pick inside the top 10 could see themselves not taking any QB in this year’s draft just to give themselves a better shot at a top pick next year. That means some teams are already thinking about tanking away the 2024 season months before it even starts.
Williams has a chance to be better than any prospect in the 2023 class anyway after winning the Heisman Trophy this past year at USC.
The transfer from Oklahoma finished the 2022 season with 4,537 passing yards, 42 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, adding 382 yards and 10 scores on the ground.

Maye might be the clear-cut No. 2 pick after totaling 38 passing touchdowns and seven rushing touchdowns last year at North Carolina. Him being 6’5″ adds to the allure for teams to want him even more.
Either way, front offices around the league already frothing at the mouth for 2024.
