The Philadelphia Eagles are not giving up on trying to make a change to the NFL’s onside kick rule.
Many times in the past, the Eagles organization has proposed allowing teams to replace an onside kick attempt with a 4th-and-15 play from their own 25-yard line. This is on the lines of what we see in the XFL.
Teams would get the chance to try it out twice a game and the traditional onside kick would remain an option.
The NFL competition committee will now look into it as they do with all rule change proposals.
“The NFL competition committee could once again look into an onside kick alternative that would give teams the chance to maintain possession with a 4th-and-15 play. The proposal has had growing support in recent years and it’s being used in the XFL. Discussions will continue.”
“I’m told Philly has once again proposed this as a rule change and will take it to vote at the annual owners meeting later in March, they will need 24/32 votes in order to pass,” Russini tweeted on Monday.

It was a real-time example of how quickly the rule can flip the result of a game.
The Eagles first proposed this change in 2020, 2021, and now once again after the most recent season. As fans, we love their determination.
In the XFL, onside kicks can be attempted at any point during a game, but the alternative is limited to the fourth quarter.
