Late last year a bidding war was taking place to see which platform would land a deal with the NFL for the highly coveted Sunday Ticket which broadcasts football games on a weekly basis. All the big players were in play as Apple, Amazon and Disney’s ESPN all put in bids.
At the end of the day, it was Google’s YouTube TV that won the bid as they agreed to pay roughly $2 billion a year for the rights to the Sunday Ticket package. On Super Bowl Sunday, they did release some of the details, but more specifics will not be released until the Summer.
The most notable detail that was revealed was that you no longer will need to have a satellite dish in order to access Sunday Ticket as you once did when DirecTV was the provider. Another interesting point is that Sunday Ticket will be available as a standalone package meaning you can sign up for it without having to commit to any other packages or channels.
More good news if you are already subscribed to YouTube TV is you will receive a discount on the Sunday Ticket Package, although pricing has not yet been revealed.
With the world moving away from cable and satellite and moving towards streaming, this seems like the perfect partnership. It will be very interesting to see in the coming months what else YouTube TV has come up with in order to enhance the viewership for the fan watching from their home.
