There has much chatter since the beginning of the 2022 offseason about Tom Brady and Sean Payton linking up. In fact, they were allegedly supposed to team up in Miami.
According to ProFootballTalk, there’s “increasing chatter” in NFL circles that Brady and Payton will team up on the Saints. Florio’s source called Payton’s return to New Orleans the “worst-kept secret” in league circles.
Payton may be retired after stepping away from the Saints, but the franchise still holds his rights.
In his absence, Dennis Allen, who served as the Saints’ defensive coordinator for Payton’s final seven seasons with the team, was promoted to head coach this season. The Saints have limped to a 6-9 record.
Brady coming to the Saints would likely be the only way Payton would want to come back to coach the Saints. The soon-to-be 59-year-old is unlikely to want to deal with a full rebuild.
Neither Andy Dalton nor Jameis Winston appears to be the quarterback of the future in New Orleans. On top of that, the team does not have a first-round pick in 2023, making it difficult to select a top QB coming out of college.
