An NFL referee came up with a crafty lie for Buffalo Bills fans when their team played the Miami Dolphins at Highmark Stadium during Week 15.
Fans arrived at the venue full of excitement as snow games can be pretty entertaining. Turns out, it wasn’t a very enjoyable experience for the players, and even less so for supporters, some of whom were shown shoveling snow off of their seats so they would not have to stand during the game.
Of course, the seat covers eventually turned to snowballs, which were pitched onto the field early in the game, prompting referee Bill Vinovich to tell fans the Bills could accrue a 15-yard penalty should someone get hit by one of the icy projectiles.
“We’ve just been informed that if a snowball hits someone, it’ll be a 15-yard penalty against Buffalo,” he said.
That was indeed far from the truth, as Bills tight end Dawson Knox said made an appearance on Green Light with Chris Long and revealed that the refs told head coach Sean McDermott that there was actually nothing they could do.

The ref is said to have told the HC, “Hey we can’t actually enforce that, we just have to say that for them to stop.”
The trick worked, because the snowballing did come to a halt. The NFL might end up making it a rule next season, and the innovative Vinovich just might be in for a raise.
