An NFL player is reported to have lost an exorbitant sum through gambling last year.
The NFL appears to have a gambling problem at the moment, with multiple players earning suspensions this offseason while several more are expected to come down.
While the league doesn’t permit non-players to participate in gambling, players are allowed to as long as they don’t gamble on NFL games or while they’re on league property.
Despite the leeway, a few players have been caught doing exactly what they aren’t supposed to be doing and, for those of us on the outside looking in, it’s puzzling. Why would anyone risk contracts worth several million over petty bets?
Well, according to ProFootballTalk, the bets aren’t necessarily petty as a certain player lost $8 million through gambling last year.
“Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, one NFL player lost $8 million last through gambling in 2022,” their report reads.

That is an insane amount to lose in any situation. But it probably stings a lot more when the situation is one you have full control over.
The report didn’t offer any more detail so we have no idea who the player is or whether the bets were prohibited or not. If the loss came as a result of prohibited wagering, someone is probably about to lose a whole lot more than $8 million.
