NFL owners may not end up voting to remove Dan Snyder from the Washington Commanders, but it’s because they simply won’t have to.
During the 2022 season, there were talks about NFL owners voting to kick Snyder out. 24 of the other 31 league owners would have to vote in favor of removing him, but the controversial owner will likely avoid that scenario.
According to a report from The Washington Post, a vote from the owners to potentially remove Snyder is now on pause since he’s likely to officially sell the team anyway:
“NFL team owners are pausing any consideration of removing Daniel Snyder from ownership of the Washington Commanders, two people with direct knowledge of the NFL’s inner workings and the owners’ views said Friday.
The owners are waiting to see what occurs over the coming weeks and possibly months with Snyder’s attempt to sell the franchise, his efforts to secure indemnification against legal liability and the outcome of the league’s second investigation into him and the team, said those people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic.
The owners expect to take no formal actions regarding a possible Commanders sale or Snyder’s status during the league’s three-day annual meeting, which begins Sunday in Phoenix, those people said.”
Snyder purchased the Washington NFL franchise back in 1999. The once-proud organization that won three Super Bowls under legendary head coach Joe Gibbs has been in complete disarray under Snyder, whom many regard as the worst owner in professional sports.
“The vote-out will happen if he insists on being indemnified,” a source told The Washington Post. “If the deal (to sell the team) is just like Denver, that’s fine. But if he expects special treatment, that leads to trouble. The biggest thing that will lead to a vote is if he says, ‘Indemnify me.’ That’s the issue.”
Forbes valued the Commanders at $5.6 billion, but of course, professional sports franchise often sell well above market value. The Denver Broncos, the most recent NFL team sold to a new owner, were purchased by the Walton-Penner group last year for $4.65 billion.

The Commanders have gone 164-220-2 since Snyder took over as the owner in 1999. The organization has made the postseason just six times, and they’ve only won two postseason games. The franchise’s last playoff victory came against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2005 NFC Wild Card Round.
But it appears as though Commanders fans will soon get what (most) of them have wanted for a long time: New ownership.
