NFL players had the option of wearing No. 0 on their jerseys back in the day, but it hasn’t been the case for many, many years now.
Given that history tends to repeat itself, the number is headed back to the NFL as a proposal from the Philadelphia Eagles has been approved and players will again have the option of having the zero on their uniforms, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
The league had already approved a proposal from the Kansas City Chiefs to have non-linemen wear any number between 1-49, while other options are contingent on position.
The Nos. 0 or 00 hasn’t been worn in the NFL since 1981.
The proposal has also led to kickers and punters being allowed any number between 0-49 and 90-99, with the current rule keeping them between the 1-19 bracket.
The approval has not been met with enthusiasm across the board but certain players should be pleased to be able to wear the numbers they wore in college. Chiefs placekicker Tommy Townsend wore No. 43 in college but wears the No. 5 now. It would seem he’s not all that keen on returning to the old number given the tweet below.

Such a rule was sure to be polarizing. But it will be interesting to see which changes come about now that the possibilities are greater.
