The NFL is serious about the rooney rule and making it work.
The Rooney Rule is a National Football League policy that requires league teams to interview ethnic-minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs, but teams have found ways to skirt past it in the past few years.
The conversation has come back up again this offseason where the new proposal will reward a team that hires a minority general manager and move them up 10 slots in the third round and six slots for hiring a minority head coach in the draft preceding their second season. A team’s fourth-round pick would move up five spots in the year preceding the minority hire’s third season.
In advance of voting on that proposal this week, the NFL made some changes to it on Monday.
There are currently only two minority general managers and four head coaches in a league that is about 70 percent black.
