A former NFL general manager and current NFL analyst believes the Baltimore Ravens should target a previous MVP winner amid the uncertainty around Lamar Jackson.
Last week, Jackson announced in a Twitter thread that he requested a trade from the Ravens back on Mar. 2. A few days after the trade request, the Ravens placed the franchise tag on the 2019 league MVP which prevented him from entering the free agent market.
Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show”, former Cleveland Browns and two-time Super Bowl champion scout Michael Lombardi suggested that the Ravens sign another former MVP winner in quarterback MVP Cam Newton.
“I love Cam Newton…he’s a dynamic leader,” Lombardi said. “If I were in Baltimore…I think I would sign Cam. Now, I understand his arm isn’t what it once was, but his leadership, his ability to create a team atmosphere is so powerful.”
Newton went unsigned for the 2022 NFL season. On Wednesday, he listed nine quarterbacks that he’d be happy to back up: Jackson, Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills), Aaron Rodgers (presumably on his way to the New York Jets), Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles), Justin Fields (Chicago Bears), Deshaun Watson (Cleveland Browns), Malik Willis (Tennessee Titans, a backup to Ryan Tannehill), Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins) and Sam Howell (Washington Commanders).
Newton added that he’d be happy to be a backup for Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud and Florida’s Anthony Richardson. All are projected to be top five-10 draft selections in this month’s draft.

After a frustrating 2020 season with the New England Patriots, Newton was brought back on a one-year deal but released after losing the starting job to Mac Jones. The Carolina Panthers brought back Newton in the midst of the 2021 season, but he lost all five starts and had just four touchdowns against five interceptions.
