The San Francisco 49ers are in a very enviable position when it comes to quarterbacks, with a pair of promising, young signal-callers on their roster at present.
Brock Purdy is now the main man following injuries to starter Trey Lance and veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, and has been incredible thus far. Come the end of the season, though, the Niners will have some decisions to make.
Garoppolo is set to be a free agent, leaving management with one less worry as he’s likely to sign elsewhere. But there’s no way Lance is going to be happy playing behind Purdy when he returns, nor will Purdy okay with not starting after what he’s shown since stepping into his current role, especially if he helps San Francisco win a Super Bowl this year. Someone’s going to have to hit the trading block.
NFL insider Jason La Canfora weighed in on the situation this week and noted that everything points to Lance will be the one who gets traded in the offseason.
“This Brock Purdy thing doesn’t look like a fluke,” La Canfora said on CBS Sports Radio’s The Zach Gelb Show (H/T Audacy’s Logan Mullen).
“They’re going to want some veteran on that team, but I don’t know how that all shakes out. Obviously, Trey Lance, do they trade him? Some people I’ve talked to in this league think they will.”

Lance appeared to hint at a desire to get traded via Instagram on Wednesday.
Purdy, meanwhile, has won all six games he’s started this season, including against the Seattle Seahawks in the postseason, and certainly has the looks of a franchise QB about him. But the 49ers could go for Tom Brady, who is also set to be a free agent.
Should Garoppolo leave, the Niners are probably going to pursue a veteran replacement.
“That’s (Brady’s) hometown team, he grew up cheering for them and his family is there,” La Canfora added. “But look, will it ultimately make football sense? (49ers head coach) Kyle Shanahan has wanted him before, will he want him now? I don’t know.”
