If the reports from Monday were true, then Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are pretty far apart on terms of a contract extension.
On the heels of rumors that Prescott turned down a $30 million per year deal, NFL Network reporter Jane Slater revealed Dak was seeking $40 million per year, but expected the two sides might eventually meet in the middle at around $34-35 million a year.
Dak has led Dallas to two division titles and a 32-16 record in three NFL seasons since taking over Tony Romo.
According to NFL insider Andrew Brant, he knows a sure fire way for Prescott to get the money he wants, but it entails him getting franchised tagged.
Franchise tags tend to get bigger and bigger each season if the team chooses to use it on the same player. The Cowboys certainly don’t want to set the market for quarterbacks, just as Seattle did with their deal to Russell Wilson earlier this offseason.

The team will look to put Prescott among the top five highest-paid quarterbacks in the league all while thinking about having flexibility to do other things to keep the team competitive.
In just three years time, Prescott is already No. 6 on Dallas’ all-time leading passing yardage list.
