Although Cam Newton is hoping to return to the NFL as a starter in 2023, he revealed last week on YouTube that he’s willing to serve as the backup quarterback for nine teams. The longtime Carolina Panthers star listed Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson, Justin Fields, Tua Tagovailoa, Malik Willis, Jalen Hurts, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, Sam Howell, Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, and Anthony Richardson as the players he would be willing to back up.
One insider not only believes Newton will successfully return, but do so for one up and coming team in the AFC.
CBS Sports reporter Josina Anderson connected Newton to the New York Jets.
“It really, Joy, just makes me think about the Jets. … Obviously, they’ve got to get Aaron Rodgers first. But if something were to happen to #12 and he is injured and can’t perform, is Zach Wilson really where they want to put all of their aspirations?”
The former QB not played since 2021. Newton started five games for the Panthers in 2021, his last NFL action. He completed less than 55 percent of his passes and threw five interceptions compared to four touchdowns. The team lost all five games that he started.
That came on the heels of a 2020 campaign that saw him throw eight scores and 10 picks during 15 starts for the New England Patriots.
