Of all the teams in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns are probably the last one that Baker Mayfield would prefer to play on right now. But according the NFL insider Ian Rapoport, it could still happen.
During a report earlier today, Rapoport outlined a scenario in which Mayfield remains with the Browns and actually starts some games for the team next season. Based on the report, it’s unlikely that any NFL team will trade for Mayfield at his current salary. At the same time, there’s no way the Browns release him for nothing. That’s because there’s a possibility that Deshaun Watson gets suspended for a significant amount of time next season.
If that were to happen, Rapoport says that keeping Mayfield around to start in Watson’s absence is “at least in the minds of the Cleveland Browns a possibility right now.”
Whether Mayfield would actually play for the Browns is another question, as the quarterback has demanded a trade while suggesting that his relationship with the franchise is damaged beyond repair.
At the moment there may be a stand-still in the Baker Mayfield sweepstakes (if you can even call it that), but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see talks ramp up closer to the draft.
