The 49ers likely knew they would find it easy to trade Jimmy Garoppolo, but it appears they may have waited too long to get a deal done.
The San Francisco 49ers reportedly overplayed their hand in Jimmy Garoppolo trade negotiations as the team was attempting to fetch two second-round draft picks.
Because of their actions the team will be “lucky” to get a day-three pick for Garoppolo.
The trade market for the veteran quarterback has reportedly “cratered,” according to NFL insider Benjamin Allbright.
“The market on [Garoppolo] has cratered,” Allbright told 95.7 The Game. “I don’t think the Colts are in on him at all. I think it’s going to be Mariota.
“I think the shoulder surgery thing is just adding salt to the wound there, and it’s just a bad situation… The Niners were hoping to get a pair of twos for him, and at this point, they’d be lucky to get a day-three pick [for] him.”
Allbright thinks the market for Garoppolo went down after the Colts traded Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders.
“I think they (49ers) overplayed their hand. Any time you’re going to see Washington take on Carson Wentz’s salary and give up two draft picks to do it, and not go after Jimmy Garoppolo, who’s been to a Super Bowl, I think that means you overplayed your hand.
“I feel [Commanders offensive coordinator] Scott Turner and the offense over there in Washington would be just fine with Jimmy Garoppolo at the helm. Carson Wentz is a giant question mark.”

When the 49ers used the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft on Lance, it seemed likely that Garoppolo was not long for the franchise, especially since he is only signed through 2022.
San Francisco did stick with Jimmy G as the starting quarterback throughout the 2021 season, though, and he posted a 9-6 record as the starter to lead the 49ers to the playoffs. He rewarded them further by posting two playoff wins and got the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game for the second time in three seasons, but they fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.
During the 2021 regular season, Garoppolo completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
