One of the many perks about being a perennial Super Bowl contender in the NFL: The never-ending opportunities to land superstar players at discounted prices.
During the New England Patriots’ dynastic run, Bill Belichick had no problem recruiting star players on cheap deals. The same deal applies to the Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid-led Kansas City Chiefs, who are coming off their second Super Bowl championship in four years.
And according to one NFL insider, the Chiefs may just have to play the waiting game to land the NFL’s best available free agent at a bargain price.
On NBC Sports Boston, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported that free agent wideout DeAndre Hopkins “is intrigued” with the New England Patriots (the two sides met last week). But according to Breer, the five-time Pro Bowler hopes to join “a true contender” such as the Chiefs or Buffalo Bills.
“Kansas City’s got almost no cap space. They’re working on a long-term deal for Chris Jones…to lower his cap number. If that happens, the door could open back up to him going to the Chiefs. I think, really what he’s waiting for, is something like that to materialize…the money isn’t great. It’s not the Odell Beckham level that he was looking for. Absent the money, I think he does want to play for a true contender.”
So essentially, the cap-strapped Chiefs could simply just wait it out and hold out hope that Hopkins will join them at a reasonable price.

Hopkins was limited to nine games last season but still finished with an excellent stat line of 64 receptions for 717 yards and three touchdowns. For his career, the five-time Pro Bowler has 853 receptions for 11,298 yards and 71 touchdowns.
Kansas City lost JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman to free agency, so there is a need for additional receiver help. Adding Hopkins to that offensive arsenal would greatly bolster the Chiefs’ chances of repeating as champions.
