The NFL 2019-2020 season isn’t technically over yet, but some teams are dealing with rumors with players on their team and who might or might not be back with the team going forward.
One of the biggest decisions is at quarterback for several teams.
One team that’s been heavily mentioned in a number of rumors is the Raiders moving on from Derek Carr as they transition to Las Vegas. Tom Brady has been mentioned as an option, but Jason La Canfora at CBS Sports predicted an even wilder scenario when he stated Carr might be replaced with Jameis Winston.
“Jon Gruden loves to gamble. He likes Derek Carr, but isn’t sure of high-end upside. He wants someone who is more willing to sling it downfield and make big plays. Winston just kinda looks like a Raiders QB, no? What a perfect fit for Vegas. Could you get him on a 2-3 year deal, kinda like a bridge situation, and also draft someone like Jordan Love? Probably. Gruden loves a challenge and coaxing the picks out of Winston certainly qualifies. This way he doesn’t mortgage his first round picks to move up for Tua or Burrow, gets a young starter, and can keep drafting weapons on offense.”
Winston is coming off a 2019 season where he became the first player to throw for 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, but also led the league with over 5,000 passing yards.
Derek Carr, who threw for 4,054 yards, 21 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, hasn’t really been able to recreate the magic he had during the 2016 season where he threw for 3,937 yards, 28 touchdowns and six interceptions in 15 games, completing 63.8 percent of his passes before he broke his leg. He also led the team to a postseason appearance.
La Canfora stated in a previous report, “Gruden and Carr have a solid relationship, the sources said, but there are concerns about not extending plays with the legs when possible, and Oakland has also struggled to push the ball downfield.”

Carr also “isn’t by nature a gunslinger or a big-time playmaker; those characteristics resonate heavily with Gruden.”
