One of the NFL’s most accomplished active head coaches is also the odds-on favorite to be the first one fired in 2023.
BetOnline (via the @_MLFootball Twitter page) has released betting odds for which coach they think will be the first one fired here in 2023. Despite leading his team to back-to-back 12-win seasons, Dallas Cowboys’ head coach Mike McCarthy was issued the highest odds of being fired first at +500.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach Todd Bowles was handed the second-highest odds at +600, followed by Ron Rivera (Washington Commanders, +700), Dennis Allen (New Orleans Saints, +800) and Kevin Stefanski (Cleveland Browns, +900).
Unsurprisingly, Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid has the lowest odds at +25000, while seven other coaches share the second-lowest odds of +10000.
Many wondered if the Cowboys would fire McCarthy after the club fell short against the San Francisco 49ers in the 2022 NFC Divisional Round, but Jerry Jones was quick to offer him a voice of confidence after their elimination.

The Cowboys have carried Super Bowl-or-bust expectations every year since the franchise won its fifth Lombardi Trophy back in the 1995 season. But considering that Jones kept Jason Garrett on for 9.5 seasons (mid-2010 to 2019) despite winning just two postseason games in that period, it shouldn’t really surprise anybody if Jones keeps McCarthy beyond 2023.
Even if they fall well short of a sixth Lombardi Trophy.
