During the third and final day of the 2023 NFL Draft, NFL Network’s insider offered an update on the status of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance.
Two years ago, the 49ers traded up into the No. 3 spot and selected the highly-touted North Dakota state product. Lance was widely expected to be the 49ers’ long-term starting quarterback, but the circumstances drastically changed.
Speaking on NFL Network, Rapoport touched base on the subject of a potential Lance trade. Rapoport stated that it’d be “awkward” for Lance to be the team’s third-string quarterback.
Rapoport noted that there’s simply “more value” to trade Lance than to keep him on the roster. Finally, Rapoport added that another team could pursue Lance if they lose their starting quarterback to injury.
Here is a look at how NFL fans reacted to Rapoport’s update on Lance’s status.

Lance was a backup to Jimmy Garoppolo in his rookie 2021 season. He opened 2022 as the starter but unfortunately suffered a season-ending ankle injury against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2.
Garoppolo resumed starting quarterback duties, but he suffered a broken foot 11 weeks after Lance’s ankle injury and also missed the remainder of the year. The 49ers then turned to Brock Purdy, the final selection of the 2023 NFL Draft.
2022 Mr. Irrelevant won all five regular season starts and helped the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game, where they fell to the Philadelphia Eagles. Purdy injured his UCL in that game and required surgery, but the hope is that he’ll be back well ahead of Week 1.
