On Saturday, Miami Dolphins cornerback and ex-Dallas Cowboys standout Byron Jones strongly indicated that his football career is over.
Jones took to Twitter and wrote, “Today I can’t run or jump because of my injuries sustained playing this game. DO NOT take the pills they give you. DO NOT take the injections they give you. If you absolutely must, consult an outside doctor to learn the long-term implications.”
In a follow-up tweet, Jones wrote, “It was an honor and privilege to play in the NFL but it came at a regrettable cost I did not foresee. In my opinion, no amount of professional success or financial gain is worth avoidable chronic pain and disabilities. Godspeed to the draft class of 2023.”
Jones’ heartbreaking tweets on Saturday led to an outpouring of support from the football word.

Achilles and ankle injuries sidelined the 30-year-old Jones for the entire 2022 season. He was widely expected to be released by the Dolphins in a cap-saving move and enter free agency. But it looks like the 2015 first-round pick is completely done with football altogether.
The former UConn standout was drafted 27th overall by the Cowboys in 2015. Jones was a quality cover corner who earned Pro Bowl and Second-team All-Pro nods in the 2018 season, and he helped the Cowboys to NFC East division titles in the 2016 and 2018 seasons.
In the 2020 offseason, Jones signed a lucrative five-year contract with the Dolphins worth $82 million. Jones joined a secondary led by superstar corner Xavien Howard, giving Miami a formidable defensive back duo.
Jones and Howard played well together in South Beach, helping Miami to 10 and nine-win seasons in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Though the Dolphins snuck into the postseason with a 9-8 record this year, their secondary clearly missed Jones’ presence.
Miami finished with the 27th-ranked pass defense in the 2022 season, allowing 234.8 passing yards per contest. The Dolphins fell 34-31 to Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Super Wild Card Weekend.
In 109 career games, Jones has four interceptions, 57 pass defenses and five forced fumbles. From 2015 to 2021, he only missed four total games.
