The Baker Mayfield era in Carolina ended on Monday when the team granted his wish and waived the former No. 1 pick after acquiring him via trade this past offseason.

The 49ers are low on the waiver wire, though, so it’s possible another tea could get to Mayfield first.
In seven games this season, Mayfield has gone 1-5 as a starter with 1,313 yards, six touchdowns, six interceptions, and a 58.7 completion percentage. With a No. 1 defense like the 49ers backing him up, he could easily improve on those numbers.
His next destination is unclear but the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams may have needs at quarterback with injuries at that position. Jimmy Garoppolo is set to miss the rest of the season with a broken foot while Matthew Stafford was placed on injured reserve last week with a spinal cord contusion.
The Browns made him the No. 1 pick of the 2018 draft after he won the Heisman Trophy.
