After throwing for 3,223 yards, 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2018 that led the Chicago Bears to a 12-4 record, Mitch Trubisky followed it up by completing 63.2 percent of his passes (326-of-516) for 3,138 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for an 83.0 passer rating in 2019 — down from 95.4 in 2018.
Trubisky’s regression on the field led the Bears to an 8-8 record and 3rd in the NFC North.
The state of the Bears’ belief in Trubisky will be front and center during the offseason on what the front office might do. Will they bring in another QB to takeover or will they let Trubisky have another go at it to see if he can get out of his funk?
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, one executive believes Chicago will try and go out and sign Marcus Mariota.
“I COULD SEE CHICAGO [FOR MARIOTA],” ONE EXEC SAID. “RYAN PACE WANTS TO STICK WITH MITCH [TRUBISKY], AND THIS WAY MARIOTA CAN START GAMES BUT ISN’T A TOTAL REPLACEMENT, LEAVING ROOM FOR TRUBISKY TO REGAIN HIS CONFIDENCE AND PLAY WELL.”
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft lost his starting job to Ryan Tannehill this season, and with how Tannehill has been playing for the Titans — Mariota’s time as a legitimate starter for the franchise has come to an end.
The former No. 2 overall pick is set to become a free agent this offseason and the Bears could likely get him at a discount price after he played badly last season and over the past few years.
