With another cap crunch looming, the Dallas Cowboys will have several difficult decisions to make in the offseason.
The team’s top running back of 2022, Tony Pollard, is eligible to enter free agency. Veteran and two-time rushing champion Ezekiel Elliott could also be released in a cap-saving move if the Cowboys decide to go that route.
If owner Jerry Jones manages to clear enough cap room, might he look to make a big splash in free agency? At least one NFL executive thinks so.
The league executive told Kenneth Teape of NFL Analysis Network that they think the Cowboys will sign Washington Commanders star defensive tackle Daron Payne, who’s coming off a career-high 11.5-sack season:
“Jerry (Jones) and the Cowboys are going to be aggressive. They want a big defensive tackle and I think they’ll end up landing Daron Payne. He’s a perfect fit and the interest is mutual.”
The Cowboys have one of the league’s best defenses led by do-it-all linebacker Micah Parsons, interceptions machine Trevon Diggs and veteran pass rushers DeMarcus Lawrence and Dorance Armstrong Jr. (a career-high 8.5 sacks this season).
Adding Payne to this defense definitely makes sense. As long as the price is right for both sides.
