A BMW is a dream vehicle for people of all ages.
But once upon a time, future NFL legend Deion Sanders quickly realized that purchasing the luxury vehicle didn’t always spell sunshine and rainbows.
The the new Colorado Buffaloes head coach explained in an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast (h/t BroBible), why he came to regret it.
Sanders, a future two-sport superstar, signed a $250,000 contract with the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. Knowing that he was about to turn professional in the NFL as well, Sanders decided to treat himself to a BMW M3:
“I bought a BMW M3. That was probably one of the dumbest buys. Not because it was a BMW but I didn’t know how to drive a stick.
Ignorant. I was just ignorant…So I get in the car and I’m like, ‘What’s this?’ I’m glad we can talk about this stuff now ‘cause it’s ignorant.”
Obviously, things turned out just fine for “Prime Time”. The Atlanta Falcons drafted Sanders fifth overall in 1989, and he went on to become arguably the greatest defensive back in the history of the league.

In 1994, he received a one-year contract from the San Francisco 49ers worth $1.2 million — a significantly high salary for players in those days. One year later, the Dallas Cowboys handed Prime Time a seven-year contract worth $35 million.
Sanders went on to enjoy a successful career as an NFL analyst before entering the football coaching world. In December, he signed a lucrative deal with the Buffaloes to take over as their new head coach.
