The NFL is reportedly looking at playing 2024 regular season games in two countries outside of North America for the first time ever.
As part of their International Series, the NFL has played games in England, Mexico and Germany. The first game in Germany took place last year, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeating the Seattle Seahawks at Allianz Arena in Munich.
Now, Eric Fisher of Front Office Sports reports that the league is exploring the idea of playing 2024 regular season contests in Brazil and Spain:
“The NFL is still considering bringing a 2024 regular-season game to either Spain or Brazil, looking to further activate an international market it hopes can replicate the fan fervor seen in Germany.
NFL EVP Peter O’Reilly said the league is in a review process on both markets as it looks to create an additional international game next year, joining planned ones in London and Munich.”
Per Fisher, O’Reilly added that the NFL is looking at Brazil and Spain “based on the size of the fanbases” in both countries.
“There’s real opportunity,” O’Reilly said. “Germany is a unique market with the history of NFL Europe and how strong the American football legacy is there, but the reason we’re looking at Brazil and Spain is based on the size of the fanbases there.”
The rapid success of the International Series has led to an expansion in the amount of games the NFL has scheduled outside of the U.S. Three games were already held in London, England this year, and two contests are scheduled to be held at the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Germany next month.
