A well-known sports personality and analyst is calling for one of the game’s top coaches to be fired.
Sean McDermott has cemented himself as one of the NFL’s best head coaches since coming to the Buffalo Bills in 2017. McDermott has coached the Bills to five playoff appearances while garnering an impressive record of 62-35-0.
But the Bills’ regular season success over the last three seasons has been overshadowed by disappointing postseason results. They made the AFC Championship Game in 2020 but have since suffered back-to-back losses in the Divisional Round.
On a recent edition of “The Herd with Colin Cowherd”, the analyst full of hot takes called McDermott “tone deaf”, and suggested that he’s the problem in Buffalo (h/t Nathan Dougherty of Heavy.com):
“Where is Josh Allen? With a rigid defensive coach, fifth year, can’t get the offensive line right. Last year, if you took out Josh Allen’s rush yards, (they still have) a crappy run game … Josh Allen is running too much, getting hit too much.
Now the star receiver is unhappy and they can’t develop a second receiver. Gosh, I wonder what it could be? The defensive rigid, conservative head coach Sean McDermott.”
There is indeed a lot of pressure on the Bills to overcome the playoff hump following a tough loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Divisional Round. But would the Bills actually fire one of the game’s best head coaches if they failed to win the Super Bowl next year?

In the NFL, coaches are rarely fired as long as they sustain regular season success.
Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots went 10 years between their third and fourth Super Bowl championships. Mike Tomlin’s Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t played in the big game since 2010, but his job is by no means in jeopardy.
Even if McDermott keeps his job beyond 2023, several notable changes should come to Buffalo if they fail to accomplish the ultimate goal once again.
