An NFL analyst believes that seven head coaches are entering the 2023 season on the hot seat.
Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport wrote a list of coaches and general managers on the hot seat ahead of the upcoming campaign. Regarding coaches, Davenport had Mike McCarthy (Dallas Cowboys), Dennis Allen (New Orleans Saints), Ron Rivera (Washington Commanders), Josh McDaniels (Las Vegas Raiders), Kevin Stefanski (Cleveland Browns), Brandon Staley (Los Angeles Chargers) and Arthur Smith (Atlanta Falcons) on the hot seat list.
Many believed that Staley and Allen would be let go after the 2022 season.
The Chargers blew a 27-0 lead to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card Round, for starters. On top of that, Staley’s over-aggressive play-calling on offense has put the team in bad spots, but GM Tom Telesco is giving him at least one more year.
Smith, Stefanski and Rivera are all coming off consecutive non-winning and non-playoff seasons. A third straight losing season would quite likely seal the fate of all three in 2023. The pressure is unquestionably on there.
McDaniels had a tough first year as the Raiders’ head coach, but a winning season would surely buy him more time in Sin City.
McCarthy has led Dallas to consecutive 12-win seasons, but a lack of playoff success leaves his long-term future in doubt. The Cowboys will likely have to at least reach the NFC Championship Game for McCarthy to get a fifth year in Dallas.
