The countdown to the NFL season will begin soon, we’re about a month away from training camps opening across the league, which means the pre-season and then the regular season are right around the corner.
Fans are already getting excited to kick off the year but even some of the most loyal fan bases know that their football season in 2023 is unlikely to be successful because they have no trust in the man leading their teams.
A football coach is more important than any head coach of any other sport. They are pivotal, as they shape the team’s direction, devise game plans, and strategize for success.
Usually if an head coach doesn’t make the playoffs within his first two years on the job, he gets fired.
With this in mind, let’s examine the top three NFL coaches who are most likely to face the axe first during the upcoming 2023 season.
Arthur Smith, Atlanta Falcons
On a scale of 1 to 10 in terms of how hot a seat is, Arthur Smith takes the cake at 10.

Smith is entering his 3rd year on the team and so far hasn’t been to the playoffs once despite playing in an inferior conference in arguably the worst division in football. A 8-9 losing record Buccaneers team won this division last season and Smith somehow finished in 4th place!
With the GOAT, Tom Brady, retiring, the NFC South is more open than ever in a conference with very few elite quarterbacks.
While the Falcons don’t have a top quarterback of their own, they have an exciting duel-threat in Desmond Ridder. The third-round pick from 2022 is going to take over full time for a team that had one of the strongest running game in football last season and just added top prospect running back Bijan Robinson with the 8th overall pick in the 2023 Draft.
If Smith can’t guide his team to the playoffs this year, or even to a winning record by mid-season, he probably gets fired before the final week kicks off.
Mike McCarthy, Dallas Cowboys
While Jerry Jones has been beyond loyal to average head coaches this millennium, there has to be a line drawn in the sand and McCarthy, despite coming off back to back 12-5 seasons, shouldn’t get an additional season next year to prove his program can work if it doesn’t work out in 2023.
McCarthy needs to get the Cowboys at least to the NFC Championship game. He has no more excuses, he has possibility the most loaded roster in the conference, a conference that lacks many truly great passers.
He also just fired his offensive coordinator Kellen Moore despite Moore helping make Dallas the second highest scoring offense in the NFL.
McCarthy will now be calling the plays for Dak Prescott, so he has to assume full responsibility if things don’t go well. His seat is as hot as it gets.
Brandon Staley, Los Angeles Chargers
Yes, the Chargers play in the mega stacked AFC West division and chances are the Chiefs will win it from now until the next decade because of Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. However, that doesn’t excuse Staley from underperforming every year when he has one of the more talented rosters in the league and one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
A couple of years ago, legendary coach Jimmy Johnson went on FOX and said Justin Herbert is a better quarterback than Patrick Mahomes, while most probably won’t agree, there’s no question that Herbert is one of the top passers in the NFL and Staley is wasting his rookie contract years.
Last season the Chargers blew a 27-point lead in the playoffs to the underdog Jaguars despite having a 5+ turnover advantage. That’s shows some really poor coaching by Staley.
While it’s true that the Chargers deal with a ton of injuries every year, that excuse can only work for so long. Staley needs to deliver some playoff wins immediately.
Will These NFL Head Coaches Survive The 2023 Season?
The upcoming 2023 NFL season holds immense promise for fans and teams alike. However, for the head coaches mentioned above, their jobs hang in the balance.
With high expectations, their performances will be closely scrutinized by ownership and fans alike.
The pressure is on for these coaches to deliver positive results, and failure to do so could result in an early exit from their respective teams.
Only time will tell how the season unfolds and whether these coaches can rise to the challenge or face the consequences of their shortcomings.
