For the second-straight offseason, the Dallas Cowboys are faced with a decision of either signing Dak Prescott to the long-term deal he wants or franchise tag him.
The team offered him a massive 5-year deal last offseason, but the QB has remained steady on wanting just a 4-year deal so he would be able to test free agency again when the NFL’s TV deal kicks in.
ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter joined “The Murph and Mac Show” recently and spoke about how teams like the 49ers might be in the market for a QB like Dak Prescott.
“They could franchise him at $37.1 million, in a year where the cap is down. And after, he can walk”, Shefter said. “They’ll try to sign him to a long-term deal, but they’ve been trying to do that now for the better part of two years and nothing’s been done. So what if, what if you’re a team like the Niners, any other team out there that has a need for a quarterback, and you make a run at Dak Prescott.
“Again, is it a long shot? Yes, it is a long shot. Absolutely. Is he a free agent? Yes he is. Is there a recipe for something to try to make happen? Well, there’s a path there of some sort.”
If the two sides can’t come to a deal and Dak plays on another franchise tag, he will become an unrestricted free agent in 2022 and free to go wherever he wants. There will be a ton of suitors for a player of his caliber that can sling the football and put up a ton of points at will.
Unlike what he has in Dallas, the 49ers have a well-balanced defense for a team that is primed and ready to go deep into the playoffs and possibly compete for a Super Bowl.
