A massive trade proposal has the Pittsburgh Steelers shaking up their offense by dealing standout tight end Pat Freiermuth to an NFC team.
Pat Freiermuth will begin his fourth NFL season on Sunday, when the Steelers visit Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The soon-to-be 26-year-old is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, so a trade isn’t out of the question if Pittsburgh is out of the playoff race leading up to the Nov. 5 deadline.
Freiermuth showed signs of growing into a star in his 2022 sophomore year, when he caught 63 passes for 732 yards and two touchdowns. But the 2021 second-round pick missed five games last year and finished with a disappointing 32-308-2 stat line.
If the Steelers decide to shop Freiermuth rather than a) extend or b) risk losing him for nothing in 2025 free agency, there should be no shortage of teams willing to take a chance on him.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has the Steelers trading Pat Freiermuth to the New York Giants in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round draft pick:
“The New York Giants were dealt a blow when tight end Darren Waller retired this offseason. Without the veteran in the lineup, Big Blue is set to lean on a pair of inexperienced options in Daniel Bellinger and rookie Theo Johnson…
To address this issue, the G-Men should inquire about Pat Freiermuth’s availability. The Steelers have yet to extend the tight end’s contract, making him a potential free agent after the upcoming campaign…Considering Pittsburgh has Darnell Washington waiting in the wings, getting a Day 3 pick in return for Freiermuth could help the team during a critical 2025 offseason.”

The Giants used the No. 6 pick on LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers to bolster their receiving corps. Still, there aren’t any other game-changing weapons for Daniel Jones on the roster, so GM Joe Schoen should definitely consider making an in-season move for another tight end like Freiermuth.
Pat Freiermuth Would Be The Ideal Trade Target For Giants
As a rebuilding team, the Giants aren’t in position to give up early-round picks for veteran talents. But if the Steelers shop Freiermuth, he wouldn’t cost much as a player on an expiring contract.
Freiermuth might not hit his ceiling in a rush-first Pittsburgh offense led by Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. Maybe an offensive-minded head coach like Brian Daboll would manage to unlock Freiermuth’s potential and form a dynamic receiving duo with Nabers.
