A playoff contender in the NFC is reportedly doing homework on Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who’s expected to be a first-round pick in April’s 2024 NFL Draft.
McCarthy has paced the Wolverines to a perfect 12-0 record. They enter Saturday’s Big Ten Championship Game against Iowa as the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, behind only the Georgia Bulldogs.
Speaking on the “Mackey and Judd” podcast (h/t Trevor Squire of Heavy Sports), Darren Wolfson of KSTP reports that the Minnesota Vikings have done “the most homework on” the Michigan signal-caller:
“Right now in this moment, they’re doing the most homework on McCarthy,” Wolfson said. “I’m not making a bold statement…but I’m just saying they have done a ton of work.”
Minnesota interestingly decided not to extend Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins this past offseason, even though he led the team to 13 wins and the NFC North division crown in 2022.
The 35-year-old suffered a torn Achilles in Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers that abruptly ended his season. Trade deadline pickup Josh Dobbs has been decent in replacing Cousins, but the journeyman QB isn’t a long-term solution for Kevin O’Connell and company.

So there’s a high chance that the Vikings will indeed be looking for a new quarterback at the 2024 NFL Draft. Bringing back Cousins is awfully risky given that he’ll be 36 years of age and coming off a serious injury.
The 6-foot-3, 202-pound McCarthy has completed 74.3 percent of his pass attempts this season for 2,483 yards and 19 touchdowns against four interceptions.
