Zach Ertz is looking to play in the NFL again this season and is said to be keen on joining a contender.
The Pro Bowl tight end could contribute to a team with Super Bowl ambitions, and the San Francisco 49ers are looking to do just that this season. According to The Athletic’s Matt Barrow, they are the “most interested” team when it comes to signing the free agent but could wait until next week to make a decision.
The Niners have been in the market for a TE to complement George Kittle for quite some time now, and Ertz could be just the man, especially as backup Ross Dwelley will miss some time after suffering a high-ankle sprain against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about possibly signing the free agent TE this week and, while he did not rule it out, insisted on being happy with the current group.
“I know John looks into all that stuff,” he was quoted as saying. “I haven’t heard anything about it now, so I wouldn’t think so at this time. But I have a lot of respect for him as a player. I’ve always been a fan. But right now, at least from my standpoint, we’re good with our group. But we have injuries, and things change, so we’ll look in all options, as always.”
Ertz made his name with the Eagles, who are reported to also have an interest, and had been with the Arizona Cardinals since 2021. He went unclaimed after being waived recently, which leaves him free to sign with any team.
