The New York Jets were let down by lackluster quarterback play in 2023, and GM Joe Douglas is widely expected to address the position in the coming weeks.
A strong defense, reliable rushing game and the strong production of rookie wideout Garrett Wilson wasn’t enough for the Jets to end a 12-year playoff drought. Zach Wilson, Mike White and Joe Flacco all struggled throughout the year, and the lack of consistency in the passing game was a key factor in the Jets’ second-half unraveling.
There are growing rumors about the Jets making a play for Green Bay Packers star signal-caller Aaron Rodgers. But according to a report from SNY’s Connor Hughes, the Jets appear to have serious interest in Ryan Tannehill of the Tennessee Titans:
“The Jets will do their homework on every available quarterback, but the pecking order seems to be as follows: Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo, Ryan Tannehill…
A Carr consolation prize wouldn’t be the worst thing. He’s a very underrated passer. The New Orleans Saints appear the frontrunners for him, though, and there are some concerns across the league with how Carr’s personality would mesh in New York. Garoppolo (familiar with Saleh) will be linked to New York if the team misses on Rodgers and Carr. Don’t sleep on Tannehill. There’s a feeling around the NFL that the Jets are much higher on him than some want to believe.”
The Jets hired former Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing as their passing game coordinator, so there would be some familiarity there if the Jets decide to pursue the 2019 Comeback Player of the Year.
Injuries limited Tannehill to 12 games for the Titans in 2022. He won six of 12 starts and completed 65.2 percent of pass attempts for 2,536 yards and 13 touchdowns against six interceptions.
Tannehill has one year left on a four-year extension worth $118 million he signed in the 2020 offseason.
