Some interesting details have emerged on a New York Jets’ players-only meeting — as well as the surprising release of running back Michael Carter — following another frustrating loss on Sunday night.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Jets waived the third-year running back. Apparently, the roster move left the Jets locker room “stunned”, as the transaction took place following a players-only meeting.
New York wide receiver Garrett Wilson spoke on the ESPN New York program “Bart & Hahn” (h/t Rich Cimini of ESPN) and revealed that the players held the meeting following Sunday’s 16-12 road loss to the Las Vegas Raiders:
“The guys talked, and we had the floor. It was just us. We got to make sure we’re all on the same page about where we’re at…That was really the message. When it comes from one of your teammates, it always hits different. It always resonates a little bit more.”
Cimini added that Carter was released only hours after the meeting, and that the move “stunned the locker room.” In a pair of tweets, offensive lineman Mekhi Becton expressed sadness over Carter being waived:

The Jets drafted Carter in the fourth round (107th overall) back in 2021. Carter had a stellar rookie year on a struggling Jets team, rushing for 639 yards and four touchdowns (he had 964 total yards of offense).
But head coach Robert Saleh and company obviously decided that some change were needed on offense as the club continues to try and get by without Aaron Rodgers. Breece Hall obviously remains the No. 1 RB, while offseason free agent signing Dalvin Cook and rookie Abanikanda can expect more snaps going forward.
The Jets visit the AFC East rival Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon.
